Homemade Flour Tortillas – Soft & Tender from Scratch

Nothing beats the taste of fresh, homemade flour tortillas. These soft, tender tortillas are perfect for tacos, burritos, or simply served warm on the side with any Mexican meal.

Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
¼ cup lard or vegetable shortening
¾ cup warm water (adjust as needed)
Instructions:
Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
Incorporate the Fat:
Add the lard or shortening. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to blend it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Add Warm Water:
Gradually add the warm water while mixing. Knead the dough until it becomes soft and elastic. If too dry, add more water 1 tablespoon at a time.
Rest the Dough:
Divide the dough into 10-12 equal pieces. Cover with a damp cloth and let rest for 10-15 minutes.
Roll the Tortillas:
On a floured surface, roll each dough ball into a thin circle, about 6-8 inches in diameter.
Cook the Tortillas:
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for 1-2 minutes on each side, until lightly browned and slightly puffed.
Keep Warm & Serve:
Stack the cooked tortillas in a clean towel to keep warm. Serve immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container.
