Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Ingredients:

For the Hamburger Steaks:

1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 egg

¼ cup breadcrumbs

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp black pepper

2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:

2 medium onions, thinly sliced

2 tbsp butter

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

2 cups beef broth

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp black pepper

¼ tsp garlic powder

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Preparation:

Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

Mix the ingredients until well combined, but be careful not to overwork the meat.

Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape each into a patty, about 1-inch thick.

Cook the Hamburger Steaks:

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the hamburger patties to the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F or 71°C). Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. Keep them warm.

Make the Onion Gravy:

Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps from forming. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Stir to combine.

Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes, until it thickens to your desired consistency. If the gravy becomes too thick, you can add a bit more beef broth or water to thin it out.

Serve:

Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon the onion gravy over the top. Let the steaks simmer in the gravy for 2-3 minutes to heat through.

Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.
