Southern Butter Biscuits

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup cold buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter, for brushing
    Instructions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir just until the dough comes together.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a rectangle.
  6. Fold the dough over itself 3–4 times to create flaky layers.
  7. Pat the dough to about 1-inch thickness and cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter.
  8. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet with the sides touching for softer edges.
  9. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  10. Brush the hot biscuits with melted butter immediately after removing them from the oven.
  11. Serve warm with butter, honey, jam, or sausage gravy.
